Research summary

Projection art; the space of illusion

From the perspective of a visual artist Sophie Ernst's research project looks at the presumed distinction between screen reality and material reality. In her artistic practice projections can be seen as analogies or magical symbols, visualizing the invisible.

Sophie Ernst (1972, DE) was trained as a mechanic at BMW(1992-1995, Munich) before studying sculpture at the Academie voor Beeldende Kunst in Maastricht (1995-1998). Ernst is a graduate of the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten (Amsterdam, 2000). In her artistic work she inquires into the notion of projection in relation to architecture, memory, culture, historical objects, urban spaces, and identity.
