Biography

Tushar Madhav (1985, India) is an independent filmmaker and artistic researcher. He graduated with M.A. Mass Communication (2009) from AJK MCRC, Jamia Millia Islamia University, and won the 64th National Film Award of India for his first film A Ballad of Maladies. The film explores the contemporary military occupation of Indian-administered Kashmir through the lens of its artists, poets, and musicians.

He works at the intersections of creative documentary film, archival research, performance-making, and audio-visual installations, seeking and voicing lived histories with his artistic practice.

Awarded with grants, fellowships, and residencies from India IFA, Raza Foundation, Uniondocs Centre of Documentary Art, Cité Internationale des Arts, Catapult Film Fund, DMZ Docs and Field of Vision, Tushar is working on the development of an expanded-cinema project probing the artistic legacy and suicide of Indian artist Jangarh Singh Shyam.

As an artistic researcher at the Netherlands Film Academy, Tushar is invested in weaving the personal with the political, the intimate with the collective, navigating forms and articulations to expand multidimensional and trans-disciplinary processes of filmmaking.
