PHDARTS SPRING PROGRAMME 2026

This semester, the PhDArts doctoral study program will consist of lectures and workshops by PhDArts staff and invited guests, as well as presentations by doctoral candidates of their research projects.

Among the staff and guest speakers are:

  • Anke Haarmann, Professor in the Practice and Theory of Research in the Visual Arts and director of PhDArts at the Academy of Creative and Performing Arts (ACPA), Leiden University, Professor of Design Theory/Research, and head of the Centre for Design Research at Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW Hamburg);
  • Sven Lütticken, Associate Professor at the Academy of Creative and Performing Arts, Leiden University, and Assistant Professor at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam;
  • Erik Viskil, Professor of Research and Discourse in Artistic Practice and director of the Academy of Creative and Performing Arts (ACPA), Leiden University, and professor in Art Theory & Practice at the Royal Academy of Art (KABK), The Hague;
  • Anja Groten, Assistant Professor at the Academy of Creative and Performing Arts, Leiden University, and course director of the design department at the Sandberg Instituut Amsterdam;
  • Frans Willem Korsten, Emeritus Professor in Literature, Culture, and Law at the Leiden University Centre for the Arts in Society (LUCAS);
  • Bo Wang is a filmmaker, visual artist, and researcher based in Amsterdam. He is a PhD candidate in cultural studies at ASCA, University of Amsterdam, and currently teaches at LUCAS, Leiden University;
  • Constant is a non-profit organisation based in Brussels since 1997 and active in the fields of art, media, and technology. Constant works with feminist servers, situated publishing, active archives, extitutional networks, (re)learning situations, hackable devices, performative protocols, solidary infrastructures, and other spongy practices to stake out paths towards speculative, libre, intersectional technologies;
  • The Institute for Technology in The Public (TITiPI) appeared in March 2020 as a bugreport. TITiPI addresses, engages in, and resists the disruptive and inequitable impact of complex global technology regimes and infrastructures. TITiPI are registered as a non-profit association in Brussels, Belgium;
  • Michael Murtaugh is the course director of the Experimental Publishing Master (XPUB), Willem de Kooning Academy, Rotterdam. He designs and researches community databases, interactive documentaries, and tools for new forms of (collaborative) reading and writing online. He is a member of Constant and of the Institute for Computational Vandalism, a collective that works at the intersection of the visual arts archive and new forms of narrative through algorithmic exploration;
  • WIELS is a centre for contemporary art in the heart of Europe’s capital, Brussels. It’s a space for innovative ideas and creative experiences. WIELS aims to enrich the debate, provide new perspectives, and stimulate the senses;
  • Jubilee is a platform for artistic research, run by a group of artists and other researchers in Brussels;
  • Gouvernement is a nomadic platform that supports young and searching makers and focuses on long-term trajectories with room for cross-pollination and trial & error. By entering into broad and sustainable partnerships, development and presentation opportunities are set up for this purpose in diverse contexts.
